Why are we asking?

Twice a year, Islanders change their clocks by one hour. In the spring, clocks move forward for Atlantic Daylight Time. In the fall, clocks move back to Atlantic Standard Time.

The Government of Prince Edward Island is asking Islanders whether PEI should continue changing clocks twice a year or move to a permanent time.

Across Canada, the approach to time change is changing.

Understand the Options

What could time change look like in PEI?

Three options. Different daylight patterns.

OPTION 01 CURRENT APPROACH

Continue changing clocks twice a year

PEI would continue using Atlantic Standard Time (AST) in winter and Atlantic Daylight Time (ADT) in summer.

Clocks would move forward in March and back in November, keeping the current seasonal approach.

November

Clocks move back
OPTION 02 AST YEAR-ROUND

Permanent Atlantic Standard Time

PEI would stay on Atlantic Standard Time all year, with no seasonal clock changes.

There would be no change to winter daylight hours. In summer, sunrise and sunset would be approximately one hour earlier than they are now.

Time change and your health

Changing the clocks can disrupt sleep. Keeping the same time year-round would remove that adjustment, but morning and evening light matter too.
